Hospitality

Six weeks ago I spoke at our Ladies’ Retreat; I chose the topic of Hospitality.  From 20 pages, here are a few excerpts.  Each principle is from specific Scripture, and note, the entire lesson was directed toward Christians.

1.  WHAT IS HOSPITALITY?

INVITATION, COMFORT, HONOR, HUMILITY, EFFORT, PROTECTION, COMFORT, FOOD, BEVERAGE, OTHER NEEDS, DILIGENCE, GENEROSITY, GRATITUDE, GRACIOUSNESS, CHRISTLIKE COMPASSION, COMMUNION

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 2:4

2.  FOR WHOM IS  HOSPITALITY?

SINNERS, ENEMIES, THOSE WHO CURSE YOU, THOSE WHO HATE YOU, THOSE WHOM YOU HAVE TAKEN CAPTIVE, ONE ANOTHER, ALL—ESPECIALLY THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH, ORPHANS, WIDOWS, THE FAINTHEARTED, THE WEAK, THOSE WHO LABOR IN THE GOSPEL, FELLOW WORKERS, SERVANTS OF THE CHURCH

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.  James 3:17

3.  WHEN OFFER  HOSPITALITY?

1.  When it is to a stranger in your midst.

2.  When it is to the stranger, poor, fatherless, or widow.

3.  Do not offer hospitality to false teachers.

4.  When it’s to men of God’s Word.

5.  When you are an elder.

Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” / He said, “I do not know.  / Am I my brother’s keeper?”  Genesis 4:9

4.  WHERE OFFER  HOSPITALITY?

IN HOMES.  For … PRAYER, FELLOWSHIP, COMMUNION, TEACHING, SAFETY, REFRESHMENT, WORSHIP, EVANGELISM, PREACHING, DISCUSSION, WORK

IN CHURCHES.  Our church should be LOVING, AMBASSADORS, HOLY, GOSPEL-FOCUSED, AND VARIED.

And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together  Hebrews 10:24-25a

5.  WHY OFFER  HOSPITALITY?

TO WITNESS TO THE LOST ~ WE BELONG TO GOD ~ WE HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN MUCH ~ WE WILL REAP IN DUE SEASON ~ GOD CALLS THIS RELIGION ~ TO STORE UP A FOUNDATION ~ HE IS COMING WITHOUT WARNING ~ IT MIGHT BE AN ANGEL ~ TO REFUSE HOSPITALITY COULD MEAN ONE IS NOT OF THE KINGDOM ~ OUR WEALTH COMES FROM GOD ~ HE LOVES THE STRANGER, SO WE SHOULD ~ THAT WE CAN PRAY FOR PROVISION ~ WE ARE PART OF GOD’S HOUSEHOLD ~ GOD GETS GLORY ~ THAT WE WILL BE BLAMELESS IN THEWORLD ~ IT IS THE SECOND-GREATEST COMMANDMENT ~ WE WERE CREATED FOR IT ~ THAT WE WON’T DECEIVE OURSELVES ~ JESUS DIED TO SET APART SOME TO DO GOOD ~ WE MAY HAVE NEED WHEN WE ARE OLD ~ WE ARE STRANGERS TOO ~ IT WILL CAUSE THE WORLD TO GLORIFY GOD

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, And the LORD will reward you. Proverb 25:21-22

6.  HOW TO OFFER  HOSPITALITY?

GENEROSITY, ORGANIZATION, TEAMWORK, IMPARTIALITY, LOVE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, FAITHFULNESS, PURE MOTIVES, HOLINESS, AUTHENTIC FAITH, OPEN-ARMED, OBSERVANT, CHARITABLE DEEDS, PROVISION, SACRIFICIAL, TRANSFORMED, GRACIOUS, URGENT NEEDS, FRUITFUL, POOR, WIDOWS, ORPHANS, GENTLENESS, COMMUNITY, CONCERN, ATTENDANCE, SIMPLICITY, SPONTANEOUS, COMPASSIONATE, CAREGIVING, RISK-TAKING, GENEROUS, CONSIDERATE, MERCIFUL, PHILANTHROPIC, SWIFT, SHREWD

…though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.   1 Cor. 13:3
