Belly Buttons

There’s a classic truism: “Opinions are like belly buttons; everybody’s got one.”  ‘Love it.  That always reminds me of my grandma.  She didn’t have one.  (Opinion, yes; belly button, no.)   Back when I was five years old, I thought it was absolutely amazing!

~~ I think mine is an “innie.”  But I’ve had The Kooshy-ness for so long, I don’t really remember. ~~

Yes.  Everybody’s got an opinion.  This morning we were discussing a trait that exhibits maturity.  It’s where we’re comfortable enough in our own skin that we can take turns.  We no longer assume our opinions are the wisest and act as the self-appointed emcee of every conversation.  It is a particularly pleasing point of poise to opine and plainly parlay the position of perfect potentate.  [Yes, I am leaving that in.]

~~ I was glad to see the midriff shirt go out of style.  As for the current trend that accentuates the muffin top, my vote’s still out. ~~

Yeah, we know you have a belly button.  We know you have an opinion.  Do you really have to behave like a curly-haired three-year-old, pulling up your shirt to put it on display?  Do ya’ think just maybe the rest of us can survive without your personal take on the best vacation spots, the First Lady, or current bathroom color trends?

~~ From Barbara Eden to Brittany Spears, we’re keenly aware of the American male’s obsession with anything curved.  But seriously: the sacred umbilicus? ~~

I, for one, relish the ping pong of swapping opinions.  I share, and learn.  It’s my God-given right as an American.  Huzzah!  I am not  saying not  to.  Share and share alike!  Today’s reminder is just this: everybody else has that same right that you do.  Don’t plow people down, treating others as if somehow you matter more.  The Lord Jesus Christ is the only One who ever had everything right; you, too, are an also-ran.

Romans 12:16  Do not be wise in your own estimation.
Isaiah 5:21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes And clever in their own sight!
Php. 2:3 with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves
Proverbs 3:7   Do not be wise in your own eyes

~~ I wonder if there’s ever been a contingent of oddly-demented OB/GYN’s – that held a Belly-Button-Tying Competition? Ew. ~~

Well, to “tie things up” (hehe), one more little reminder for all of us:  If your opinion is strangely kooshy, warped and poorly formed, or accumulating lint, Please—just pull your shirt down.
