He Wrote it for You to Read It

‘Got troubles?  Read your Bible.  ‘Feel discouraged?  Read your Bible.  ‘Got sin?  ‘Want to know about God?  Read your Bible. Are you anxious?  ‘Want to give up sometimes?  Read your Bible.

This week I heard a solid sermon on how God comforts us (and we all need comfort, that’s for sure).  God is the source of comfort; and His method is through words of encouragement, comfort, and perseverance in His Book:

Romans 15:4 – For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

God is the Teacher, the Bible is His Curriculum, and we are the students.  God is the Comforter, and we can trust Him.  God is the Encourager, and we can know He comes alongside.  1 John 2:1 – I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Sermon Quote:  “We glorify God when we hang in there.  By contrast, we bring reproach to the name of the Lord when we cut and run; when the first time there’s any pressure, we just skedaddle.  The flesh can do that, but the Holy Spirit is the One who gives perseverance.”

2 Cor. 1:3-4a – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction…

Sermon Quote: “Whatever was written was written – He didn’t waste this.  He didn’t say, ‘I’ve given you this Book, I’ve given you exactly what you need, but you don’t need to use it.’ …  We participate in this by opening up the Book, and prayerfully and humbly asking Him to teach us.”

Ps. 119:97-98-   – O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, For they are ever mine.
