I am a Friend

Don’t get upset if I speak to her privately:

Some things are public; but no, not all are.

Don’t clue me in, saying, “He’s all bad news”—

I already know that, because we all are.

Life is surrealistic, and flies by so fast,

It gets a bit foggy—but this much is real:

Once I have told someone, “I am your friend,”

No one—no, no one—can change how I feel.

You could tell stories that’d curl Geraldo’s toes;

You could maneuver, manage, and manipulate.

People could boycott, and battle, and bale,

But that wouldn’t matter: I’ll still be their mate.

Foibles and faux pas are temporal bits

That happen when neighbors try to be sociable.

We bear with each other, keeping our word:

Some things in life are just non-negotiable.

Just for the record, I’m talking of kinship:

I don’t have such loyalty for every wicked foe.

It’s just those who have joined me down to the heart;

There’s no written agreement; yeah, we just know.

‘Don’t know the future; it could get a little choppy.

They might have a breakdown and go off the deep end.

But don’t try to change this: I’ve got their back:

And will, till my tent collapses: I am a friend.
