It Used To Be…

= – = – =
It used to be — We talked of the weather:
Blooming into — Great conversation.
Now we just — Watch the elevator:
Privately planning — our next vacation.
– – –
It used to be — Folks helped out each other:
Looking for ways — To stand in the gap.
Now we just — Shrug at our brother:
(” ‘Made his own bed: — Man, what a Sap!”)
– – –
It used to be — We stopped at the grocer:
Saying hello — To neighbors and friends.
Now we just — Tweet it on Twitter:
‘Hundred-forty characters — More or less.
– – –
It used to be — we sought out advice:
On jobs or kids — even called our moms!
Now we just Google — or Bing, or Yahoo:
Who talks to Dads — About what’s going on?
– – –
It used to be — we went on a date night:
To gently encourage — the dear one we chose.
Now we just — Text a quick message:
Really, people? — Is that how it goes?
– – –
I say let’s be — a people still human:
Showing our need — for tender affection.
Remember popcorn? Games? Laughing?
Those were the days — Making connection.
– – –
At this awkward moment — I can’t do an invite:
‘Cause you’d think it spam — That would be lame.
But maybe this once — Think of the love:
Consider a time — when we were the same.
– – –
We talked on the phone — Met for coffee:
Didn’t have texting — Candy Crush, or Hang.
It was just called a potluck — Or a hike — or a party.
And missing an update — Wasn’t a “thang.”
– – –
Maybe meet for coffee? — That dear, long-time friend?
Or if… yeah, it’s been awhile… — maybe just a spin?
…In someone’s four-seater — (Woo Hoo! Road Trip!!!!)
And if you’re not too busy — Maybe fit me in?
