The Ephesians Letter, Simplified

Ch. 1  ~~~ You’re the blessed adopted:  Dear Christian— God chose and adopted you. His Son bought you with blood, and your sins are forgiven. Not only that, He made it so you understand this now, before He ties things up. And there’s an inheritance waiting—a sealed promise.

I am thankful for you, and pray that God will help you see things: that His calling means you have hope, that He has riches and glory waiting, and that in Him you have great power: so strong that it raised His Son from the dead! And Jesus now sits with God, far above all—as head over all.

Ch. 2 ~~~ You were dead sinners:  You used to walk in worldly sin, like the devil. We all used to—and God was angered. But God loves us, so He made us alive in the spiritual realm. For ages, people will know how kind God is! We didn’t deserve it: God gave us faith to become spiritually alive. Nobody earns it; it’s what God created us for, and He did it.

Don’t forget, you used to be separate from the Lord and His people, without hope. But in Christ now you’re near: He reconciled His chosen ones and brought peace. He brought truth to all and we have access in one Spirit to the Father—no longer strangers, but citizens of God’s household, Christ the corner stone.

Ch. 3 ~~~ You are enlightened lights: Paul went to prison for telling everyone about God’s grace, unraveling mysteries formerly revealed to prophets and apostles, mysteries now understood by us as well through the Spirit of God.

These mysteries are that we are heirs, members of the body of God, and partakers of the promise in Christ through the gospel, which Paul taught with God’s power but in humility. All of this—His Son’s death and our salvation—is how God will show His wisdom to the spiritual realm. Don’t lose heart at seeming injustices: they are actually a glory for the church.

So we pray for strength and power through His Spirit, that Christ will live in us, that we’ll be rooted and grounded in love, understand God’s immense love, and mature. To God, who can do way more than we think, be the glory forever. Amen.

Ch. 4 ~~~ You are called to walk:  I implore you to walk worthy of this calling. Be humble, gentle, patient, and tolerant. Actively keep the peace. After all, there’s one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father—of all, over all, through all, in all.

But to each one is given a certain measure of grace and gifts. Jesus has been to hell and back. Now, in heaven and above all, He’s making apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers, and helpers—to build us all up into unity, knowledge, and maturity, to the stature belonging to the fullness of Christ.

We aren’t to be like kids, believing everything we hear. We’re to search for truth and grow up in all aspects into Christ, the head from whom the whole body—working together—can grow in love.

Don’t walk like the world, in futility and ignorance, excluded from the life of God because of hard hearts: they’re callous, impure, and greedy. But you didn’t learn Christ in this way—if indeed He’s taught you and you laid aside your old self, which is being corrupted. Be renewed in your mind and put on the new self, created in God’s likeness, righteousness, holiness, and truth.

Don’t lie, don’t develop sinful anger, don’t steal, don’t be vulgar. Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit. Put away bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, slander, and malice. Be kind, tender, and forgiving—just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

Ch. 5 ~~~ You are to imitate God:  Imitate God as beloved children. Walk in love, as Christ also loved you to the point of death. There must not be immorality, impurity, greed, or vulgar talk—but thanksgiving—because no immoral or greedy man has an inheritance in God’s kingdom.

Don’t be deceived: God’s wrath will come upon the sons of disobedience. So don’t do it: you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light; walk as children of Light, trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Even expose sinners, because their ways are disgraceful.

Walk not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. Don’t get drunk, but be filled with the Spirit. Speak in psalms and songs, giving thanks, and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Marriage is a picture of Christ and the church, so wives, be subject to your own husbands, and husbands, love and teach your wives.

Ch. 6 ~~~ You are God’s representatives:  Children, obey and honor your parents. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Employees, be obedient, heartily, not just as men-pleasers. And masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening.

Finally, be strong in the Lord. Put on the full armor of God against the spiritual forces of wickedness. Stand firm, girded with truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, and the Bible.

Be on the alert and pray at all times for all the saints, and that the gospel will be made known.

Peace, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love.
